This week, we've been thankful for some important new research that has been released by NACCOM (The No Accommodation Network).

The report, 'Refused? Experiences following a negative asylum decision', has been led and delivered by people with lived experience of destitution and immigration control. It unpacks the often devastating impact of negative asylum decisions for people seeking safety in the UK.

Drawing on 27 in-depth interviews with service users in the NACCOM network, the report contains qualitative findings pointing to the personal impact and trauma that can follow a negative asylum decision.

At Boaz, we have seen this to be the case for many of the people we have supported, but it is really significant that this research has been carried out to confirm and evidence what we know to be true.

The systemic and practical barriers that people face are also detailed in the report, shining a light on the human cost of poor and ineffective asylum decision making and processes.

Our CEO, Ros Holland, shared, "Over the last 20 years we've worked with countless people who have struggled to navigate the complexities of the UK asylum process, and who have, in too many cases, been refused unjustly."

"As an organisation working on the front line in an increasingly hostile environment, we believe it's crucial that people with lived experience of the asylum process are involved in shaping what we do and how we do it."

"We've heard from people we work with at Boaz how significant it is to feel heard and to have the space to share their wider experiences. This creates opportunities for people with lived experience of a negative asylum decision to contribute to the design and development not only of policies and frontline services but ultimately to develop a more just asylum system where no one is made destitute."
