“Over the last 5 weeks, as part of #BoazLife we’ve been able to offer our clients a series of sewing workshops. Based at Islington Mill, our clients have worked together on a collaborative project with help and guidance from Jessie Stringer-Fewtrill and Sally Gilford of the Salford Makers collective.

Our clients learned and practiced a range of different skills print design, screen printing onto fabric, hand and machine sewing, hand embroidery and pattern cutting, and worked together to produce a collection of three different outfits made from scratch. We’ll be exhibiting these in 2020 – stay tuned for news about that...

These sessions have offered our clients the chance to get into a different headspace and to take their minds off their asylum situation by being able to direct their focus elsewhere for a couple of hours each Monday morning. It has been a great way to start the week!

It has been brilliant to see our clients working together and forming and strengthening friendships over the course of this project. There has been a range of different experience and knowledge among our clients participating, from one who used to work as a professional tailor to those who have never picked up a needle and thread before!

Despite this, everyone has looked forward to and enjoyed sharing skills and learning new things in these sessions, and we have all had fun in what has been a really relaxing and positive atmosphere. It has also been great to see people exploring their creativity and encouraging one another.”

A huge thank you to those who have helped make this project happen:
